Question: WHY DO I HAVE TO TEST ADRENALS BEFORE TREATING?
Answer: In the earliest stages of adrenal fatigue, cortisol, goes sky high. Then the diurnal rhythm gets screwy. And finally, cortisol goes low. Now here's the other problem... when cortisol is low, your body produces adrenaline instead. And the symptoms of high cortisol and adrenaline are nearly identical, but the treatments are opposite. So unless you *know* whether you're low or high, you can't know how to treat it.
If cortisol is high, holy basil, phosphatidylserine and zinc work because they lower cortisol.
If you're normal and then low later in the day, licorice works well because it extends the life of cortisol in your body.
If you have overall normal amounts but a screwy rhythm, ashwagnda and rhiodola work because they are adaptogens and both lower and raise cortisol as needed and thus can fix up a screwy rhythm.
If you're low overall, you need a cortical glandular like Isocort (not a whole glandular, which contains adrenaline) or hydrocortisone, depending on how extreme your lows are.
Many products for "adrenal fatigue" contain some mixture of these ingredients. For example, one product contains ashwaganda (adaptogen) and phosphatidylserine (lowers cortisol), so if you have low cortisol already, this is not going to help and is going to stress you further. Your pituitary will be pumping out the ACTH trying to overcome the effects of the product, and stressing your adrenals further. Generic stuff advertised as good for adrenals or not can vary wildly.

Question: WHERE CAN I ORDER MY OWN SALIVA TEST KIT, MY DOCTOR WON'T ORDER IT?
Answer: We recommend Canary Club. Although sex hormone testing is best done with blood, for the first look at your overall adrenal issues the test which includes DHEA and Sex Hormones does help clarify things a bit more. If you can afford to get that test, we recommend it. It's called Canary Club Advance Adrenal & Reproductive panel for $159. If this is out of your price range the next best option is, Canary Club Diurnal Cortisol 4x for $99. Any further sex hormone testing should be done with blood.

Question: WHAT CAN I DO UNTIL MY SALIVA RESULTS ARE AVAILABLE SINCE SUPPLEMENTING WITH ADRENAL SUPPORT WITHOUT RESULTS IS NOT A GOOD IDEA?
Answer: Sea Salt, Vitamin C and a good B-complex. These are the only safe things to take until testing is complete.
Question: WHERE SHOULD MY SALIVA LEVELS BE?
Answer: You should be at the top of the range in the morning, on the high end of the range at noon, about midway in the range at evening, and on the low end at night. Any other results, even if "in range", and you need treatment to heal.
